Well it's not about 'killing' the ego as such, just seeing it for what it is. It's just an illusion of self, and it's never been questioned before. Just taken for granted your whole life. Until now..

Thoughts are still going to happen - how could we perform day-to-day tasks without thinking?

This is about seeing what's real, and looking to see if this self is really who you are. It's not about forgetting - like you said - because what's to forget if it isn't real?

And no, I didn't give up, or surrender. I just looked to see if I could find a 'me'. But no, there wasn't one. Just thoughts, and emotions, but no central me. Just life living, just that.

You say you're afraid. That's actually an understandable response, but what is fear? Welcome it, let it give you it's wisdom, but look behind it, what's the message. Nothing real ever dies, so just trust this. Trust life.
