Re: 10,000Things

Postby poppyseed » Sun Jul 26, 2026 9:55 am

Dear Kristine
I'm really sorry to hear about the surgery. I can completely understand why there is nervousness around it. Please know I'll be thinking of you on Wednesday.
When I look closer it morphs into part of the sensation field.
That is beautiful. Notice what keeps happening… Something initially seems solid, then you look, and it quietly dissolves back into simply what is appearing. That has happened with self, with body, with death, with believing. Again and again, looking reveals something much simpler than thought first suggested.
Now to your question.
Can you unpack any of that for me?
I want to be careful here. I don't know whether your sensitivity to medications will change, and I wouldn't want to pretend that I do. Your doctors are the right people to guide you medically. What I can point to is something we've been discovering together…
There is the practical situation – appointments, doctors, medication, surgery. All of that belongs to life and can be responded to as wisely as possible. Then there is everything thought adds - "What if...", "This always happens...", "I don't want to become a statistic."
Those are stories about a future that, as you've already discovered, cannot actually be found. That doesn't make them wrong. It simply means they are thoughts appearing now, just as we found with death, with choice, with "believing." Perhaps, over the next few days, don't try to stop believing anything. That is another subtle struggle. Instead, when a frightening thought appears, simply notice: a thought. Then notice what is actually here before the next thought arrives. You have done this beautifully many times now.
Perhaps there is something we can explore together. You described a great deal of fear around the surgery and the medications. Rather than trying to get rid of that fear... Become curious about it.
Suppose the fear could speak. What is it trying to do for you? What is it protecting? What does it believe would happen if it didn't arise?
Don't answer quickly. Let sensations answer before thought does.
Earlier we've seen that thought often arrives afterwards with an explanation. This time, don't look for an explanation. Stay with the sensations. Let fear do exactly what it does. See if, underneath all of its activity, there is a simple protective movement.
Fear works as a protective mechanism, a signal to not go somewhere unknown, unsafe, or dark. But, in experience, this signal is only a sensation triggered by thoughts. This sensation is not to be feared. Just as any other sensation, it comes and goes. When felt fully it dissipates. Explore it with curiosity, as if you have never seen it before. Ultimately, fear is sensations that prevent us from going into another sensation. Sensations are not to be feared; they are here to be experienced. And even if they are uncomfortable, they add a richness and juiciness to life.
When the mind sees that there is nothing behind the fear, the protection mechanism stops protecting that nothing. This may come like a shock, but what is the worst thing that can happen to nothing? Fear is a friend, really. It is protection. It guards from harm. But all those ideas that appear important cannot be harmed. The image of me is made by the mind. It is not something that can be harmed, can disappear, can die, or can be lost; it’s an image created by the mind and protected by fear, as if the mind instructed itself to forget to question the self-made image of identity. Don’t fear the sensation of fear. Say yes to it the next time it comes up and see what else you notice about this mechanism, about the nature of sensation and what triggers it. Explore it with curiosity, fearlessly.
I am so enjoying leaning into my life.
Stay there. Not in the imagined future or the imagined outcome. Just here, leaning into this one unfolding moment.
Write when you're ready after the surgery. I'll be here.
Good luck!
Love
Rali

Dear Rali,

I am very touched by your latest note. I read it before surgery and felt stronger. Brilliant.
Suppose the fear could speak. What is it trying to do for you? What is it protecting?
It is trying to alert me to danger, trying to protect the body. I guess I can be grateful for that. It is afraid there is an end to something. It is trying to protect itself, maybe not even the body.
What does it believe would happen if it didn't arise?
It seems to think I (or the universe) can’t handle things without its instruction. I let it know that I can actually, and can even protect it if it lets me.
what is the worst thing that can happen to nothing?
The worst thing is perhaps believing the nothing is something. Only illusion. Mind doesn't get that much of the time.

Surgery went well enough, recovery is harder than expected. Trying to be still. Do inner work. Bliss out on the little things like stepping out of the car and hearing the music from the farmer's market.

Much love to you, and thank you for being there.

Dear Kristine
I'm so relieved to hear the surgery went well, even if recovery has been more challenging than you expected. Please be gentle with yourself and give the body the time it needs to heal.
It (fear) is trying to protect itself, maybe not even the body.
That feels like a very honest observation. Fear seems to arise as a protective movement - not because there is necessarily something wrong in this moment., but because it has learned to anticipate danger. Fear isn't protecting you. Fear is protecting... its own continuity. Or more accurately, the pattern perpetuates itself.
It seems to think I (or the universe) can't handle things without its instruction.
Notice something.
Can fear actually think?
Or is that another story appearing afterwards?
Can fear itself be found?
Or are there simply sensations, together with thoughts describing them as "fear"?
Can sensations think? Or do?

I let it know that I can actually, and can even protect it if it lets me.
It is trying to alert me to danger
Look gently there.
Who is the "I" that is reassuring fear?
Can that protector actually be found? Can the Universe be found in DE?
Or is there simply another comforting thought appearing?

Nothing needs to be changed. Nothing needs to be corrected. Just notice how thought effortlessly creates these little relationships: fear, protector, protected,… Then look.
Are there actually separate characters? Are there you (the Universe) and fear that are having some kind of a relationship?
Or is there simply this unfolding, just as you've been discovering all along?

Finally, I loved this:
Bliss out on the little things like stepping out of the car and hearing the music from the farmer's market.
There is something beautifully ordinary about that. No special state. No dramatic realization. Just life unfolding.

Continue recovering well.
We'll keep looking together when it feels right.
Love
Rali

Dear Rali,
Can fear actually think?
Ha ha, you got me, NO.
Or is that another story appearing afterwards?
Definitely a story
Can fear itself be found?
Not found.
Or are there simply sensations, together with thoughts describing them as "fear"?
Yes, that. Mind interprets sensations as fear.
Can sensations think? Or do?
No, they just arise.
Who is the "I" that is reassuring fear?
I see there is no I here. But does that mean that there’s no use in doing some kind of homemade parts-work?
Can that protector actually be found?

No. Again the parts-work question.
Can the Universe be found in DE?
Definitely not
Or is there simply another comforting thought appearing?
Not sure that there’s anything comforting in thinking the universe exists.
Are there actually separate characters? Are there you (the Universe) and fear that are having some kind of a relationship? Or is there simply this unfolding, just as you've been discovering all along?
Yes, only unfolding. It’s obvious now. Wish that would stick in the hard moments.

Doing much better as of today.
Thank you for being here.

Dear Kristine,
I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better.❤️
Does that mean there's no use in doing some kind of homemade parts-work?
I'm not so interested in whether a particular approach is right or wrong. What interests me is something much simpler…
When difficult emotions arise, can the stories be put aside for just a moment?
Before there is fear, protector, vulnerable part, universe, or healing... what is actually here?
Can you stay with the raw sensations themselves?

Without trying to change them, reassure them, or understand them. Just this.
You've already noticed many times that when you look closely, what first seemed to be "fear" becomes simply sensations. Then even "sensations" becomes another label for what is present.
Perhaps that is enough. Not because stories or therapeutic approaches are wrong, but because before every story there is already this immediate, wordless appearing.
Wish that would stick in the hard moments.
Look there gently.
What would "sticking" actually look like?
Would life stop including contraction?
Would difficult sensations never arise again?
Or is the wish for it to stick simply another thought appearing?
Is there an expectation that once seen, you should never contract again? That looking will happen all the time?

Wanting control over thoughts is just that — wanting. Spontaneous “actions” are happening, and so is the thought story. Thought (the narrator) tells the story in first person: "How I did this and I did that", owning the deeds, presenting himself or herself as the creator, the master of body, the thinker of thoughts. I am the good guy or the bad guy, depending on the situation. There is a story about trying to be in control and not succeeding and the feelings of guilt and shame that arise with the failure. It is interesting to watch how all this works, how thoughts of lacking and wanting create a ripple of sensations, and how you can’t control any of it. Sensations arise; take a look at them.
Which one of them is the sensation of “being in or out of control”? Can you pinpoint it? What is that sensation without the label?

Looking is most probably never 24/7. There's usually a "honeymoon period," and then what we call, "got it, lost it," as untrue beliefs come up to be questioned. This can go on for months and years. The initial shift is irreversible, just as we can never go back to believing in Santa Claus. Difficult situations present an opportunity for soem missed beliefs to be exposed and seen through. Notice that throughout our dialogue the pattern has been remarkably consistent - contraction appears, then looking happens, then what seemed solid is seen to be just another appearance. Nothing has gone wrong when contraction appears. It is simply another invitation to look.
Continue recovering well.
Love
Rali

Dear Rali,
When difficult emotions arise, can the stories be put aside for just a moment?
Yes, when I remember to. Reactivity is much less than it used to be, but not with my stickiest stuff.
Before there is fear, protector, vulnerable part, universe, or healing... what is actually here?
Just this.
Can you stay with the raw sensations themselves?
Yes, I will focus more in that direction.
What would "sticking" actually look like?
Sticking would look like spontaneous DE.
Would life stop including contraction?
I don’t think so, it would not tell a story about the contraction though. Or argue with it, or push it away, or disassociate.
Would difficult sensations never arise again?
No.
Or is the wish for it to stick simply another thought appearing?
It’s a thought.
Is there an expectation that once seen, you should never contract again? That looking will happen all the time?
Not an expectation but a desire.
Which one of them is the sensation of “being in or out of control”? Can you pinpoint it? What is that sensation without the label?
Yes, I don’t know how to explain them but I recognize the sensations of both. I will pay attention more in this way, it's easier now that I'm so slowed down.

Dear Kristine,
Beautiful!
Sticking would look like spontaneous DE.
Look carefully.
Is there ever anything other than direct experience?
Even when contraction appears, or stories, or when attention seems completely lost...
Isn't that too simply what is appearing?
It would not tell a story about the contraction.
Beautiful. Notice that contraction itself doesn't seem to be the issue. Stories may appear. Contraction may appear. Both are simply part of the unfolding.
The interesting question is:
What exactly is it that believes the story?
Earlier we looked carefully for believing and couldn't actually find it.
Has anything changed?
Or are there simply thoughts arising, followed by more thoughts commenting on them?

Not an expectation but a desire.
Which one of them is the sensation of “being in or out of control”? Can you pinpoint it? What is that sensation without the label?
Yes, I don’t know how to explain them but I recognize the sensations of both.
Wonderful! Before thought says, "I want this.” / "I want this to stop." /"I wish this would stick."
What is actually there?
Don't name it or explain it - just become familiar with its texture.
Does that contraction itself ask for anything?
Or is the wanting already the story that appears about it?
Is wanting/desire in the sensation at all? Or is the sensation innocent (meaningless) and the wanting is the interpretation?

Love
Rali

Dear Rali,
Is there ever anything other than direct experience?
No. Everything is DE, its only mind saying its not DE when attention is in thought.
Isn't that too simply what is appearing?
Yes
What exactly is it that believes the story?
Looks like nothing believes the story.
Has anything changed?
No, still nothing doing any believing.
Or are there simply thoughts arising, followed by more thoughts commenting on them?
Yes, that.
Before thought says, "I want this.” / "I want this to stop." /"I wish this would stick."
What is actually there?
Just whatever is arising…sensations.
Don't name it or explain it - just become familiar with its texture.
Does that contraction itself ask for anything?
No
Or is the wanting already the story that appears about it?
Yes
Is wanting/desire in the sensation at all?
No, its added after the sensation.
Or is the sensation innocent (meaningless) and the wanting is the interpretation?
Yes, exactly. So nicely put. So much is just that.

Thank you,
LK

Dear Kristine
Beautiful.
Or is the sensation innocent (meaningless) and the wanting is the interpretation?
Yes, exactly. So nicely put.
Yes. Notice how simple that is. The sensation doesn't ask for anything. It doesn't say: "Keep me" or "Get rid of me." It doesn't even say: "I am pleasant" or "I am unpleasant." It simply appears.
Then, almost effortlessly, thought tells a story: "I want more", "I want this to stop", "This shouldn't be here." You have seen something very subtle – the wanting isn't in the sensation and the sensation isn't pulling life in any direction. The movement begins when thought interprets what is already present.
So much is just that.
Yes. And there is no need to force anything beyond that. Just continue noticing - again and again.
Perhaps this week, don't even look for the story, just become curious about the very first instant - a sensation appears. Before the next thought arrives...
Is anything lacking?
Is anything asking to be different?
Or is there simply this?

I'd like to ask you a couple of simple questions.
When you look now, is there any doubt that a separate self cannot be found?
If there is, what exactly is doubted?
Is there anything that still feels confusing or unresolved about what we've explored together?
What has changed and what hasn’t in normal everyday living?
What is the biggest difference from before starting this conversation?
Is seeking still going on?
Can you say with a big fat YES, it is clear what the illusion of a separate self is?

Take your time. There is no need to answer in any particular way.

Love
Rali

Dear Rali,
Before the next thought arrives...
Is anything lacking?
Nothing lacking now!
Is anything asking to be different? Or is there simply this?
No/simply this
I'd like to ask you a couple of simple questions.
When you look now, is there any doubt that a separate self cannot be found?
No doubt. Something jumped in for a second that would have been labeled a self in the past but it immediatly dissolved.
If there is, what exactly is doubted?
No doubt, just curiosity for a moment on how real that illusion used to appear.
Is there anything that still feels confusing or unresolved about what we've explored together?
No confusion, but some of the tough stuff is probably not resolved. I’ve been looking for it but it’s not coming up now.
What has changed and what hasn’t in normal everyday living?
How I view things has changed. There is less thought overlay on stuff. I remember more quickly the stuff we have discussed as I live it. I am enjoying being still so much. The surgery came at the exact right time, even if it didn’t :-). I’m inward more and it’s the same as outward.
What is the biggest difference from before starting this conversation?
Working with inner energy fields(?) is becoming more frequent and natural, no longer immediately disassociating. Welcoming them.
Is seeking still going on?
I don’t know if it’s seeking but I’m very much welcoming the moment to moment arrival of sensation. Feels like the right thing now.
Can you say with a big fat YES, it is clear what the illusion of a separate self is?
YES it’s clear that the separate self is an illusion, loving that!

Thank you so much,
LK

Hi Kristine
Wonderful!! I'm really happy to read your reply!
No confusion, but some of the tough stuff is probably not resolved. I’ve been looking for it but it’s not coming up now.
That is quite normal. There is no requirement that every conditioned pattern disappears or that life stops presenting challenges. What has changed is that you now know how to look.
Throughout our dialogue, whenever something felt solid—a self, awareness, body, thought, fear, wanting, believing...—you looked directly rather than taking the story at face value. Again and again, what seemed so convincing dissolved into simply what was appearing. I suspect the same will happen with whatever "tough stuff" still comes your way. In fact, when something feels sticky or there is resistance, don't see that as a setback. Those moments often point directly to a belief that hasn't yet been examined. They become invitations rather than obstacles.
You don't need to go looking for them. Life has a remarkable way of presenting exactly what is ready to be seen. And when it does, you already have everything you need: stop, look, and notice what is actually here before thought explains it.

And of course, you don't have to do that alone. If something feels confusing, sticky, or simply interesting to explore, you're always welcome to write. I'd be very happy to keep looking with you.

We have some checkpoint questions. Would you like to answer these?

Love
Rali

Dear Rali,

I can feel into what you're saying, and have started catching resistances when they come up. Hoping to incorporate that into my regular practice in some way as well.

Thank you for being willing to keep looking with me when it feels confusing. Surely there will be something(s) and I will know where to turn.

I have really enjoyed this time with you. It was very challenging at the beginning, took a long time to look at each thing you asked. I remember sitting here sweating for an hour sometimes trying to see! It is so much easier now.

I am happy to answer the checkpoint questions.

Thank you SOOO much for your time.

Dear Kristine
Reading this made me smile. 😊
I remember sitting here sweating for an hour sometimes trying to see! It is so much easier now.
Yes. That's exactly how it goes. At first, looking can feel like hard work because thought is trying to solve the inquiry. Then, gradually, something shifts - looking becomes simple and immediate, almost effortless.
I can feel into what you're saying, and have started catching resistances when they come up.
I'm really happy to hear that. Not because resistance is a problem, but because it often quietly points to an unquestioned belief or expectation. You don't need to go searching for these. Life has a wonderful way of presenting exactly what is ready to be seen. And when it does, you already have everything you need: simply stop and look, just as you've been doing throughout our dialogue. Nothing needs to be finished. There are no certificates handed over at the end. This is simply the beginning of a different relationship with experience—one where looking becomes increasingly natural.

And of course, my offer stands. If at any point something feels sticky, confusing, or simply interesting to explore, you know where to find me. I'd be delighted to keep looking with you.
Now, as promised, I'd love to hear your answers to the final checkpoint questions...

Please answer all questions in full, when you are ready. Please answer what's true for you rather than any sort of 'ideal' answer
1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?

2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.

3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.

4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?

5) Describe decision & give examples from experience.

Describe intention & give examples from experience.

Describe free will & give examples from experience.

Describe choice & give examples from experience.

Describe control & give examples from experience.

What makes things happen? How does it work?

What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.

6) Anything to add?

Dear Rali,

This was part enjoyable and part challenging, but not for anybody.
1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?
No there is not a separate self, was not ever, but I once believed there was.
2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.
The illusion of a separate self maybe began around the age 4, from believing I was an individual body and mind that was supposed to present and behave in a certain way to be liked, accepted, and feel safe. And that there was an ‘I’ that could do anything about that. It resulted in a deep belief of loneliness and isolation which probably perpetuated itself through the belief in cause and effect. Now that it is obvious there is no separate self, there is a deep trust that it is natural and entirely safe to not find one.
3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.
It feels expansive. As if operating from a wide open space rather than an isolated spot. I feel safe. Peaceful. Emotions flow through and they are not scary. Things flow more slowly, I’m not efforting so much to make things happen. Not trying to get anywhere. It is easier to state my truth and be real. Loneliness is not showing up. My natural state seems more one of looking/seeing than seeking.
4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?
Early this morning I was walking down a trail and ‘looking’ down over Durango town when the train set off and blew it’s whistle. All felt serene. I saw/felt the sound of the whistle from everywhere, including the body, and there was not a “one” that heard it. Only sound and noticing sound.
5) Describe decision & give examples from experience.
Decision is the point at which an option is selected. Decision appears to happen but there is no apparent ‘I’ or anything else that makes the decision and I don’t see an exact moment that it happens. Not sure how it works.

When I was driving home from the farmers market I decided to get on the computer at some point today and here I am. Lately I see that I am driving around until I am not. Once home I ultimately ended up at the computer. No way to know if it came from a decision or if it just happened. Not so sure about cause and effect anymore.

Prior to sitting down here I decided to pop popcorn. There was a soft inner dialog prior to that weighed the cleaning of pot and pan, and potentially feeling yucky after, but I can’t see how or exactly when popping became the decision, it just happened.
Describe intention & give examples from experience.
Intention seems to be the plan to do something and then following through. IE - Last night I set the intention to go to the farmers market this morning and then did. Except there was no ‘I’ making the intention or following through. Not sure how it happened and it doesn’t seem to matter. A lot like a decision.
Describe free will & give examples from experience.
Pondering free will feels like chipmunks. Free will to me is the ability to instigate action based on one’s own power of choice. But “will” implies that there is an ‘I’ who wants the action to happen and who makes a choice. Looks like stuff just happens, things arise, and there is no ‘why’ or ‘I’. If that’s the case free will makes no sense.
Describe choice & give examples from experience.
Choice is when there is more than one option and you decide on one. When I sat down at the computer to write this I could have chosen to make a spreadsheet for an ongoing lawsuit, check my emails, or answer these questions. There is an apparent timeline on the spreadsheet, yet these questions are being answered. I don’t see the exact moment when the choice or preference was chosen, and I don’t see anyone who made that choice.
Describe control & give examples from experience.
Control is taking action to change something. It is a clenching around the solar plexus. I don’t see a one that can do control. Global things are clearly out of our control… Fukushima, 9/11. Apparent attempted control in day-to-day life happens, and then it looks like control worked. Looking deeper I see thought simply claiming ownership of the result. IE – Dog jumps out of the car in a busy parking lot. I instantly reach down and grab her. But there was no thinking involved, my hands/arms just grabbed her. It is only thought that says the action controlled the situation and that I even effected its implementation. There was no ‘I’ that took control. Same as when I dropped a bill at the farmers market and tried to grab for it and it landed on the ground anyway.
What makes things happen? How does it work?
Things just happen. They happen because they do. Cause and effect doesn’t seem to exist when looked at directly. I don’t know how anything works.
What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.
That’s a weird question. How can a 'no I' be responsible for anything?
6) Anything to add?
No. This was kind of hard (question 5) and it feels done. I’m sure a comment or question will come later. Please share where I’m off base!

Much Love,
K

Dear Kristine,
Thank you for taking the time with these. I enjoyed reading them. As I was reading, I noticed something interesting. Throughout our dialogue, whenever I asked you to look, you would stop, look directly, and report what you found. Again and again something that initially seemed solid quietly dissolved. While reading your answers, it felt as though a little inertia crept back in. Rather than looking freshly, there were moments where thought answered from memory, from definitions, or from the old story. That's completely natural—we've all done it.
So I'd love to invite you to do one more pass through all of the questions. Not because the answers are wrong or because I'm looking for particular words, but because I know how well you can look now.
Forget everything we've discussed together for a moment.
Read each question as if you've never seen it before. Stop. Look. Then answer only from what is immediately obvious. You may find that some answers become much shorter. Or they may surprise you completely.
No there is not a separate self, was not ever, but I once believed there was.
Look carefully.
Was there ever an actual "I" that held a mistaken belief? Or was there simply the belief (a pattern of thoughts) that there was an "I"?
Can you see the difference?

The illusion of a separate self maybe began around the age 4, from believing I was an individual body and mind that was supposed to present and behave in a certain way to be liked, accepted, and feel safe.
You have looked at timeWhen is ”around the age 4”?
Right now, how does the illusion appear?
When the thought "I" arises, what exactly happens?
How does thought create the impression that there is someone here with a past?

Describe the mechanism as it is seen now, rather than where it may have originated.
Decision is the point at which an option is selected.
Intention seems to be the plan to do something and then following through... Not sure how it happened and it doesn’t seem to matter. A lot like a decision.
Looks like stuff just happens, things arise, and there is no ‘why’ or ‘I’. If that’s the case free will makes no sense.
Control is taking action to change something.
These sound like dictionary definitions on top of the uncertainty about the mechanism. Earlier in our dialogue we looked very carefully at decisions (please go and revisit the pointers if you need to). You found that no chooser/controller could be found and that the choice simply seemed to be there as a commentary. Looking now...
Is there actually a decision?
Or is "decision" another label / a commentary added afterwards to describe what has already unfolded?
Can a point be found where "a decision" begins?
Or is there simply THIS, with a thought saying, "A decision was made."

Similarly with intention and free will…
Cause and effect doesn’t seem to exist when looked at directly.
Seem? Is that a clear observation or a guess/acquired knowledge?
Seems like/feels like = thought
What does looking reveal?
What makes the sensations to appear? What makes seeing to appear? LOOK! Is there anything that causes anything to appear? Do cause and effect exist without labels/things, with just this? Is the description/explanation/label needed for this to happen?

I'm looking forward to reading your answers again.
Love
Rali
