1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?
There is no separate entity “self” at all and there never was.
2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.
The illusion of a separate self is a collection of thoughts and sensations localized in an apparent pattern. There is no concrete self that is constant or unchanging. The components that form the sense of self are ever changing and lack solidity. The sense of self likely starts early in childhood as the child gets feedback from the parents that constantly refer to a set of experiences by a certain label. For instance the child learns its name and roles and starts developing a fixed identity. And everything in the child’s surrounding is also labeled by parents and the child starts associating certain direct experiences and replacing them with labels and will eventually start seeing itself as separate from the rest of the environment. The way I see it now, I am able to hold both paradoxes at hand, meaning I can see this body mind as a distinct appearance and separate it from the environment for example I won’t walk into an incoming car :), but it is also clear there is no separate experiencer in this body mind and there is no boundary.
3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.
It actually feels very ordinary. It doesn’t feel like a huge revelation. It is seen as this is the way it has always been. The only difference is the expectation that some pivotal experience will happen sometime in the future is no longer there.
4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?
It felt like a gradual clarity as opposed to a single bit making a final push, like a fog slowly clearing but no specific moment to pinpoint to. But directly looking into the body and questioning about inside vs outside world was helpful.
5) Describe decision & give examples from experience.
Describe intention & give examples from experience.
Describe free will & give examples from experience.
Describe choice & give examples from experience.
Describe control & give examples from experience.
What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.
There is no decision, intention, free will, choice or control. These are all thoughts that arise as part of experience. There is no chooser or decision maker. Experiences arise then disappear. Thought that says I chose this experience vs that might arise, but how that specific thought itself came into existence is a total mystery.
What makes things happen?
Nothing makes things happen, there is only happening spontaneously, without the need for anything or anyone to make it happen.
How does it work?
It’s impossible to know how it works. It just is.
6) Anything to add?
It’s a relief to not wait for a future moment or a different reality.
