3. How is it that the illusion of a separate self begins?
With a thought. However subtle it maybe, if not seen for what it is, it will cause separation from THAT...wholeness.
4. How would you explain this to someone who'd never heard that there is no self?
Take them back to when they (as in the body) were born, i.e. before the body was given a name. Then ask them to name the obvious parts of the body, i.e. legs, arms, head etc. Then speak of the internal organs and various properties. And then ask..."well where were you then?" if speaking of the present, one would have to ask them where are they when they are being operated on and when the surgeon has the body split open with the organs showing?
More to the point...there is only the 'idea', 'thought' that you exist...when not thinking or formulating into words, past concepts or ideas of what you think or have been raised to believe you are it is impossible to point to anything as 'you' because there remains silence, in which there are no words, ideas, concepts or beliefs. But if you are to identify yourself to 'something', something that has been referred to with the attaching of a label, it is only so possible when it is secondarary to thought, it is only because you 'thought' of it...which is 'post' having heard it been put into a word, idea, concept or belief...all of which are just that: words, ideas, concepts and beliefs; there is something prior to all of those things, and that is what you are - nothing.
5. What was it that finally pushed you through, got you to see?
Erm something I didn't mention to you. Lol. I cannot remember which, but it was either your video, or it was written on your blog...I think it was a video of yours. It was you saying that "I was sooo fired up for this", speaking of your experience of LU. I also then felt that fire the next time I sat. Coupled with the "focused attention being the best thing we have, hands down" comment made me almost burst (I was sitting with eyes closed bringing focused attention to the centre of the body/head) to the point where the body and head were shaking. Lol.
After which, it was most evident that something had given way when I was sat in the normal chaotic moment of my kids making the usual racket, the wife making her usual racket lol, after I had gotten up and left the room...it was there...silence...just there...peace...no thoughts, and the recognising of it really hit home.
And so I now also recognise the difference between seeing through the illusion of self and the complete destruction of the self...something which I was getting very confused about.
6. How does it feel to be liberated, dear friend?
Beautiful. And it's getting better by the day...especially when you notice the subtle changes or ways the mind would have reacted or taken me on a journey in response to certain situations etc.
Relief. I'm not suffering. I feel in tune with (sorry for the following terms) the way/path/journey.
Drunk. Yes drunk at times with the amount of energy flowing through the body - ecstasy.
Grateful. To you...and the expression that you bring onto the world.
