Thank you for these great exercises! It’s really cutting through some long held concepts. Actual experience is proving a lot of “obvious ideas” in thought are completely false. I did the exercises a few times to let the experience sink in. Everything is on autopilot.
Concepts in thought. Time exists only in thought. What are "now", "past" and "future" in actual experience?
A thought cannot think; a thought only arises. Thinking is the illusory concept that thoughts appear through a processes called thinking. They simply appear effortlessly. Is it possible for a thought to think?
That can’t be found. Just a hand raises, even without thought. What is it exactly that is choosing which hand to raise?
Choosing is just happening. Can you find a separate individual or anything that is doing the choosing?
Nothing appears to be controlling it.What is it that is controlling the hand?
No.Can a ‘controller’ of any description be located?
No.Can anything be found that makes the hand [move]?
It just happens. The action appears before the idea of a decision. How is the decision made?
The sensations and image in the mirror are completely independent from one another. The image does not know what the sensation of the body feels like, and the sensation does not know what the body looks like.Is there any connection between the felt sensations and the image in the mirror?
Yes, thoughts and mental images suggest there is a connection.Or just thoughts (and/or mental images) suggest that there is?
They are both independent experiences. Is there any connection between the felt sensations (labelled ‘hand’) and image of movement in the mirror?
It is the same as in the mirror, there is no connection between these two senses. They do not know anything about each other. Is there any connection between the felt sensations (labelled ‘hand’) and the image ‘of movement’?
Or only thoughts suggest it?
The image alone is a collection of colors. It is the thoughts that interpret an object as a body.Does the image by itself suggest in any way that is ‘you’ or ‘your body’?
An image cannot know what a body is, it only see’s colors.Does the image itself suggest in any way that it is a ‘body’ at all?
Only colors and shapes.Or are there only colours and shapes?
There is no visual knowledge to say so. The thoughts say “of course there are legs because I can feel them”, but those are only sensations with a thought label “legs”. The visual knowledge says there is only what is seen.Just by the image in the mirror, is there any ‘knowledge’ that there must be legs, or only thoughts and mental images suggest so?
There is no ‘body’ to be seen or known. Only sensations. Is there a ‘body’ anywhere when all thoughts and images are ignored, or are there only sensations?
Only sensation and color. Is there a ‘body walking’, or are there only sensations?
Walking is sensation with the thought label “walking”Is there actual experience of ‘walking’ at all?
No ‘body’ can be found, only through concepts, like an institution. Can such a thing as ‘body’ be found OR just THOUGHTS ABOUT a ‘body’?
Walking is also a concept in thought with sensation. Can such a thing as ‘walking’ be found?
There is only sensation and image/color, but location cannot be seen. The images change but the location is always here. Are the sensations localized in space, like ‘going through the room’; OR is there only an image that is labelled ‘room’ and appearing sensations without any location?
Thanks again,
Chris
