Re: Learning to Look

I don't know - could you help me to look for a doer or absence of one again, perhaps in another way - if I were to say no doer now I feel I wouldn't really know what I was saying. Feels like a step into the unknown.

Re: Learning to Look

I don't believe "sense of doer" exists other than as a thought. It can't be found with any of the other senses.

Re: Learning to Look

I reckon identity becomes a thing when it is thought about. I'm like this - this will happen if I don't do that etc. So I suppose the more thoughts there are like this, the stronger the sense of a doer is. It's not like I have a clear sense of self though. Just some thoughts that are to do with that ...

Re: Learning to Look

I can't feel it - there are feelings being felt but not by a me. I just got frustrated during a presentation I was making and said something I shouldn't have. I felt bad. This is emotion, thought. I feel heavy in my feet. Thoughts like - soldier on occurring. Imagining further problems.

Re: Learning to Look

'I'Ness is my way of describing the sense of an identity, a thinker, an owner of thoughts, emotions and sensations. Memories are vague and often clearly to be distrusted but questioning the sense of a doer in the present seems a bigger job.

Re: Learning to Look

I just mean there are more thoughts of 'I'ness in the present moment than as a memory. I'll try to write plainer - it's a habit of using long words ☺

Re: Learning to Look

Thoughts that when examined point at something not found. But thery are stronger and more abundant in the present moment than as memories - although these can seem powerful tool.

Re: Learning to Look

Hi Bananafish

I'll say 'no' in the same spirit as I said 'yes' before. If I think about it, my memory of me opening the fridge and getting the milk does not feel like me - just a representation in thoughts. I feel a lot closer to me in this moment with all the senses going.

Re: Learning to Look

It can't be prooved 100% - there will always be uncertainty - but does that bring the whole house down?

Re the you of memory that would seem like a big set of thoughts which can't be relied on

Re: Learning to Look

I can't 100% sure the memory happened - or of anything I guess. I'm not sure where that leaves me ( :) )

Re: Learning to Look

I've got it now - milk - next to me on the stairs where I'm sitting. Not the usual place for me to have milk. I recall reading your instruction and then acting on it. The instruction is still in the thread for me to refer to. All this backs up the conviction I would normally hold that I went to the ...

Re: Learning to Look

Yes it is an intellectual understanding - or at least a conclusion I draw from not being able to locate a self outside of thought. You gave me a yes/no choice so I felt closer to the former. But really I don't know. I can't say I've really seen anything *or even the absence of something) - and I don ...
