Good! Focus on that & ask if you can find any separate self in Direct Experience?

Hi Jazzmina,
Read through these. It is like the examples in Gateless Gatecrashers. See if her answers resonate with you

and this from Vince:
When I’ll ‘wake up’
A story & investigation about when it will happen
vince Schubert
Feb 15
For years she imagined awakening as an event.
Something ahead of her.
Something she would reach.
A future moment where everything would finally line up.
She pictured it arriving like a milestone —
Then I’ll be awake.
Then I’ll know.
Then I’ll be done.
One afternoon, sitting quietly, that thought appeared again:
I’m not there yet.
And immediately after it — something subtler:
There is no “yet” here.
She looked around.
The room wasn’t waiting.
Her breath wasn’t preparing.
The sound outside wasn’t approaching anything.
Everything was already happening.
She realised then that awakening couldn’t possibly arrive later — because later never shows up.
The past only appeared as memory — now.
The future only appeared as imagination — now.
Even the idea of “waking up someday” was happening — now.
If awakening were real, it wouldn’t be a future achievement.
It would have to be recognised in the only place anything ever appears.
Now.
She laughed softly.
Not because she’d arrived —
but because she saw she’d been postponing something that could never be postponed.
Awakening hadn’t been delayed.
It had been continuously overlooked —
by looking for it somewhere other than where she already was.
INVESTIGATION — “When Could Awakening Happen?”
This investigation isn’t theoretical.
It’s very practical.
1. Look for “later”
Right now, ask:
Where is the future?
Don’t answer conceptually.
Look.
You’ll find thoughts about later — appearing now.
Images of later — appearing now.
But never later itself.
2. Examine the idea of awakening
Ask:
When do I expect awakening to happen?
Notice how the answer always references:
improvement
readiness
resolution
a coming shift
All of that appears as thought — now.
3. Notice what’s actually present
Before the next thought arrives, check:
seeing
hearing
breathing
sensation
Ask:
Is anything missing from this moment?
Not philosophically — experientially.
4. See the trap
Seeking says:
“This isn’t it — something else must happen.”
But notice:
That statement itself appears now.
Seeking doesn’t delay awakening.
It keeps attention pointed away from the only place awakening could be noticed.
5. The simple recognition
If awakening is real, it cannot be:
remembered
anticipated
stored
achieved later
It can only ever be recognised now.
Not as fireworks.
Not as permanence.

Thank you so much for sending these and for your assistance all these months as well. I attended Vince's group this morning and plan to continue to do so. Thanks again for suggesting it. Her answers did resonate with me. And the story and investigation make sense and are helpful.

Re: Seeing There is No Real self
Ok.
I see trees and the neighbor’s rooftop out of the window. I see mountains with low hanging clouds and a small spot of blue sky. I see the window and the curtains at either side.
I hear the sound of hands typing on keyboard. I hear the sound of foot sliding on the floor. I hear the sound of breath leaving the mouth. I hear birds chirping in the distance. I hear the sound of cars in the distance.
I feel the chair touching body. The feel the table under forearms. I feel the keys of the computer.
I smell the musky smell of the air in this room.
I taste the last cup of tea I had lingering in my mouth.
The thought arises to write that I am not working right now and have more time for this investigation. I really want to work on this and see through the illusions of the self, thoughts, control and identity. The story you sent makes it sound so simple and so ordinary. That does make sense to me. Later exists only in thoughts. Participating in Vince’s group also shows how simple and ordinary this is. Which is both comforting and my mind says frustrating. But when I pause and look where is frustration- it’s a thought labeling the sensation of tightening and tensing in my upper body.
Return to seeing the trees outside the window and hearing the bird chirping in the distance and there is ease and a sense of relaxation. I think it would help me to write to you from my direct experience and receive your feedback and pointers. We’ve been at this for many months and I am so grateful you are sticking with me and not giving up on me.
Thank you, Jazzmina

Re: Seeing There is No Real self
Did you get this? Meeting with Ilona. Sorry for the extra spaces. I think there were graphics there.

Hello ,
What do you think the mind is?
Whatever you think, it is thoughts about the mind.
We are accustomed to words like my mind, in my mind, my mind thinks, there is a lot going on in my mind, and so on — as if there is something called “mind” that is producing thoughts, storing information, and reading these words right now.
Yes, there is mental energy flowing freely as streams of thoughts and images. And there is an idea that there is a thinker, identified as “me.” I think.
But what is really going on here?
This is a profound question. What is the mind?
If thoughts arise and say, “There is no mind,” notice that these are thoughts about the mind. And if thoughts say, “There is a mind, it is thinking,” those too are thoughts about the mind. So all we can ever know are thoughts. And thoughts tend to organize experience into little chunks we can understand.
On the seeker’s journey toward the truth of how things are, there is a distinct point where thoughts are seen as thoughts. There is no entity there thinking thoughts, and there is no need to fight or manipulate them. They are fleeting, empty, and carry no weight - unless another thought appears claiming that thoughts should disappear, vanish, or no longer arise.
So the deeper question is not how to end the thinking process, but how to see it for what it is - a flow of words and images happening by itself, with no need to make it into a big deal.
With that, the belief in thoughts as truth begins to loosen.
Watching thoughts arise and pass. Nothing to do with that. No need to argue with them or protect yourself from them.
Just see the process. The function. The flow.

Thank you for sending these. I will attend the Zoom tomorrow. It seems like you think the best way for me to see there is no real self is to attend these sessions and do practices.
Thanks so much,
