LU is focused guiding for seeing there is no real, inherent 'self' - what do you understand by this? I’ve read the Gateless Gate and through the EQ. I also read a book by the Dalai Lama entitled “How to See Yourself as You Really Are.” It’s my understanding that the “I” that we perceive as a separate self or entity does not truly exist and that our feelings, sensations and thoughts convince us that there is a separate self that doesn’t truly exist
What are you looking for at LU? I’ve been applying the exercises and trying to be aware during the day of my thoughts. Every once in awhile I feel like the “I” drops away, but quickly reasserts itself. At LU I am looking for a guide who can help me finally drop the I.
What do you expect from a guided conversation? I’m hoping that through pointed conversation that the dissonance between my feeling that there is an I and the truth of the I results in the “I” dropping away. Even though I’ve read through the Gateless Gate and EQ I still have a questions and think it would be helpful to have an experienced guide, someone who has gone through the process to ask questions and get guidance.
What is your experience in terms of spiritual practices, seeking and inquiry? I have been Buddhist for many years. I’ve participated in a few retreats including with Adyashanti and Rupert Spira. Most of my retreats have been either mantra recitation or tranquility meditation. I’ve also participated in a number of guided meditations. After these retreats I would often feel a sense of open awareness or feel like the I had dropped away, but it would not be long before it was fully reestablished. Sometimes when this happens I often feel more like I’m dissociated rather than more connected to the world, which makes me wonder what in fact I am experiencing. Maybe this is just some type of altered state, which is not what I’m looking for. I am only interested in truth, not an altered state. I feel that I am driven to find the truth and will always try to find it. Even though I’ve done a number of retreats, I have never focused specifically on trying to recognize that there is no I. I really hope that an experienced guide from LU can help me take this next step.
On a scale from 1 to 10, how willing are you to question any currently held beliefs about 'self?
