Oh, PS - there is something I would like to share. What tripped me up in giving a direct answer to this question.

On this question: Has it always been the case that I and self are just thoughts, or was there a time when a real I existed?

"Has it always been the case that I and self are just thoughts" -> Yes, that is clear.

What tripped me up was:
"or was there a time when a real I existed"

At one point you said thoughts are real. But there is no content to them.

So when this question was asked in that manner - I became confused on how to answer it.
Since "I" is a thought, thoughts are real. lol - this is where I was going deep!

Anyhow - There is No "I" that has ever existed.
