You might start inventing better ones.
You might make entertaining ones.
If you catch yourself taking them seriously, you'll laugh out loud.
You have a mind and it's the mind's job to create stories. ..and it's really good at it.

Ha, you think that i think that you're joking. (maybe)
Well, it doesn't matter if you're being metaphorical or literal if you're joking or serious. The fact is that you (and me) are definitely alien to so-called normal society.
A society where armoured knights (using the armour of a self) ..where they dash around constantly challenging everybody that they encounter.
On that alien planet, everybody recognized that everybody else is actually themselves and treats them as they would want to be treated.
There, the self is treated as a temporary learning tool and usually discarded by age six. It's not used as a defence but as a means of communicating.
After it's discarded, there is almost no verbal communication as information is seen as dead knowledge. People communicate with body language and it's almost always about being helpful.
If somebody is seen trying to roll a boulder uphill, dozens of helpers will instantly be wordlessly pushing and pulling and grunting appreciation at the opportunity to assist.

Whether you arrive here before or after the age of six doesn't really matter. There will be somewhere deep inside you a primal memory of your origins.
To get in touch with it might appear difficult from this (sick) societies viewpoint, but if you tap into a feeling of love then you will be really close to it.
Ok, now to keep this out of the head (where it is conceptual) see if you have flashes of recognition when you move around in 'normal' daily life.
The recognition that your whole world is an extension of you. Hmm, that came out potentially misleading...
i mean that 'you' (not you - you're not a you) ..that you (I don't know a better way to say it) ..that you are not confined to a body. Everything that used to be 'not you' is in fact you. ..and that includes every body.
Yet it is the same for them. ..but this is too big for the mind to comprehend.
If everything that you comprehend is you and everything that they comprehend is them - how is it not separate? 'cos it's not.
So don't try to understand it. Just experience it.
From this perspective, it's all love. ..which is not a thing. ..can't be measured. ..can't be bottled. Can only be experienced.

Hi James. Wow. this is the second tome in 24 hours that I have responded to someone else but when I get to your post it seems that what I just responded with is relevant to you.
Here it is..
; the witness isn't a thing. It is the observing (not by any body or any thing) in a non-judgemental non moralizing way. It is the actual observing. It has no relationship with what is observed. (hence no memory) It is always in the present. It has no idea of the past or future. (or even now)
It is the experiencer of experience. It is what is experienced. It is experiencing itself. It has no agenda. It has no will. It has no intention. It is merciless in it's reporting, but reporting only happens while experiencing is happening. It reports to no one.
It doesn't report with words. It cares not what response or reaction arises from it's reporting.
You may have a relationship with it, but it has no relationship with you.

Two things -

Following on from Alan saying - Look but don't go to the mind.

1, I find that whenever I look, the only place I'm looking from is mind. I have the thought to look, and that thought already has me in mind. And if I don't think to look, then I'm not looking.


2, When I'm looking, I'm also looking for an absence (the self that's not there), yet all I keep seeing are the things that are there (body, sensations, thoughts etc). The absence doesn't become obvious to me.

yes, and if you don't find it (what the mind says you are looking for) then is it because it isn't there or because it is still hidden?
So, what do we do?
If I tell you to look to confirm the existence of something, it becomes a simple yes or no.
Can you confirm the existence of lots of stories describing the characteristics of James?
If the answer is yes, then can you confirm that the response to these stories contributes in a substantial way to the delusion/illusion that a self exists?
If the answer is yes, then you don't have to change anything except the illogical conclusion that the delusion/illusion is proof of the existence of an actual, inherently independent, separate self.

Both require a mental concept.

Mental concepts don't cut it here.
It's that deeper feeling when you just know something.
My concern here, is that there have been times in my past, when I felt I knew something, which later turned out to be wrong.
My guess about all this, is at some point I will "know" the self doesn't exist, and that this will never turn out to be wrong.

For some unknown reason, this question makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm having trouble getting to a straight answer.
One thing I can say for sure is that stories describing James definitely contribute to the type of self (in LU words - the type of self illusion).

So, they're the ones to look at.
Remembering that feelings are sensations with stories hanging off them, can you identify the stories?
Do this by first isolating the sensations. Then the stories become obvious.

Yes, but it's not a function of memory, but how experience has integrated. You might say a cellular memory. It requires no thoughts.
..and yes, because that experience was fitered by conditioning, it also will dissolve. ..but it is a useful staging post.
Alternatively, you could (like me) go straight to 'not knowing' anything.
Boy, I so remember my mind working how I imagine that yours works. ..and if it does, then enjoy the gymnastics that it performs as entertainment because it is not what is going to get you 'there'.
It will happen as a sudden flash of recognition (probably) triggered by some ordinary perception.
