When we look very closely and precisely we come to see that “me” thoughts only refer to other “me” thoughts, not to an actual abiding “me.”
Observe thoughts wth precision; 1 can you ever find a ‘me’ within the “me” thoughts and feelings, or just a sense of me?


Pay attention to mental activity – to thoughts and images in the mind.
2 Where are they arising?
3 Are they inside something?
4 Are they central to you, or are they peripheral?
5 Do they leave any trace when they have gone?

Dear Adil,
The operation went well - thank you.
I had some initial fear that there would be pain during the operation (as I thought I would be awake) but I was prepared to try to see it as sensations arising and passing rather than fixing it as "my pain".
The operation did bring the "I" thought up quite strongly though, as if there was something that needed protecting.
In fact, the sedation meant that I was barely conscious throughout.
Since the operation, I have been trying to remember to look at sensations in my body as direct experience rather than label them as pain. etc which is not helpful. Better to say " prickling, burning, squeezing" etc.

Re an entity made of flesh with thoughts and feelings:
I said this because in the same way as there was a direct experience of looking at a "spoon" as colour, shape, etc, there was a direct experience of looking at the "hand" which gave rise to the thought that there is a body there.

I see that it is only a sensation when I press finger to flesh and that it is a thought saying this is an entity made of flesh.
I don't know if there is really a body or not. There is a thought that says there is a body.
The actual experience is that there is something solid which experiences sensations and thoughts and feelings. Or is that just another thought?

I accept that but I don't see it like I see that Santa has never existed.

Where is this self when you don't think about it ?
Where is it while you are driving, eating, listening to music ?
IF it is not real and there while you have no thoughts about it how can it be real, here and now ?

Replacing the letter "I"

Z loved this exercise! It made me smile but also took the heat out of desire, ill-will, preference. "I" is no more valid than "B" or "Q" and is no more real. P intend to continue doing this (whenever R can remember!) It really opened up a very helpful space and lessened the pre-occupation with T and all the props that V include to shore up the sense of self.
