Describe choice & give examples from experience.
Choice is the appearance of free will being real. There is a belief that the separate self gets to choose between red and white wine, choose what clothes "I' wear, what "I" eat, what to watch on TV. There appears to be many separate things to choose between and there is a belief in preferences as a result. From experience, it appears 'I" chose my partner and to move to the Isle of Man to be with her. To buy a boxer dog, to buy a chihuahua, to go to Thailand, what 'I' just ordered for my lunch and in which restaurant. A real question to ask is, who is apparently making those choices and how does that happen? How is it that sometimes it is very noticeable that it's just happened and others there appears to be thoughts which make it seem like there was some kind of deliberation? And if there is deliberation how is there something else witnessing that apparent process? Choice seems very real until it is really looked at and challenged.
Describe control & give examples from experience.
Again, this is a concept which makes it appear that the self has autonomy. 'I' want to shout in an argument but 'I' exert control and refrain. On another occasion 'I' will shout. Where has the control gone? Why is it ever changing if it's something 'we' have all the time? 'I' wont have a dessert because "I'm" on a diet, and then dessert happens. It is perceived there has been a lack of control where in fact there was a thought observed saying don't have a dessert and dessert happened anyway because there is no control, only what unfolds to awareness. If there was really control why is it so unstable and apparently inconsistent?
What makes things happen? How does it work?
Things are just happening. This was character "Emma's" experience of being a separate self. I guess it feels like a software program. It has an apparent timeline and story but no decisions were made. How many times do 'we' apparently believe we could have, should have done and differently and wonder why we couldn't? Because there was no way for it to be any different whilst unconsciously going around playing the game believing you are the character and that you are in control.
What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.
It seems that the only responsibility is to choose between believing the unfolding events are created by and happening to a separate self, to keep the character, or to sit back in awareness and watch what appears to be happening, knowing that awareness is simply aware of what appears to be. Thoughts come and go and are not intentionally created by a brain or a mind or a person, or whatever it may appear to be. Events happen without decisions being made, that is very clear now, no matter how much thoughts make it seem that that isn't true. My only responsibility is to choose whether to stay in the belief of a separate self, and suffer as a result, or to observe it as if it were a movie. From here, there is a choice about how to respond. Taking everything super personally, believing things happen to 'me' that make me a victim. Believing other separate selves are doing things to 'me'.
Examples
Any kind of judgement about needing a situation to be different. I am responsible for accepting it as it is as it's just what's happening and this is what is showing up more and more. There is no responsibility to change what's happening (as it's not possible), only what the response is. Total acceptance of what is, changes the need to defend, attack, suffer!
'Emma' was always very defensive apparently. I know now that I can observe and choose not to defend when seated in awareness. When I believe I am Emma, this doesn't happen because someone out there is doing something to me! But at the same time if Emma did manage to not defend she would believe she had achieved something when in fact it was just what happened.
