Re: Clarity

Hi Becca,
This was much the same as the other experiences in that the imagined description is taken from memory and is distorted with a number of different memories, while the direct experience is what was felt in the moment.
yes, great.
Similarly..
Imagine crossing your legs. Now cross them. Tell me the imagined sensations and then the actual ones and the difference
3. Similarly, you could imagine walking, then walk.
4. Imagine pinching your skin, then pinch …
What do you notice?

In the imagined experience, there is no substance to it, it is changeable, unclear, light and air like or formless, it was hard to locate and was taken from recalling pass experiences.
In direct experience it feels much more real, solid, heavy there are gross sensations, it’s 3D, there is much more to the experience, more variety of sensations, it seems to have a form.
This was the same/similar to each of these exercises.

Great, Becca, you've definitely got this one!
Continuing to explore body awareness in direct experience:
1.Close your eyes and imagine the size and shape of your left foot.? how do you experience it? Is there a visual memory/ mental image of the foot? Describe what comes to mind.
2.Now still with eyes closed, tune in purely with the directly experienced physical sensations that you had before. Do the actual sensations have the same size and shape as the image of your foot? Describe your foot purely in DE.
What difference do you notice between 1 and 2?

It seemed the same. I’m not sure if i was doing this right. But it was hard to imagine the foot without actually sensing the foot. After a few moments the sense of the foot disappeared and then the same with direct experience unless I moved the foot and then gross sensations were felt.

The only difference was in the first exercise a faint visual of the foot was present

ok
Last one of this type now:
Close your eyes and feel the sensations of your bottom on the chair or sofa in DE. Can you actually discern where the boundary of your body meets the chair or sofa? Or does the boundary exist merely as an idea? Describe the sensations of sitting on the chair.

I can’t find the boundary. The feeling is a sensation of fizzing which is more tightly compact fizzing where my body meets the chair.

Hi Becca
I can’t find the boundary.
good!
I love the fizzing! Great noticing!

Continuing to explore direct experience...
There is a big difference between knowing that there is nothing to give up and seeing that there is nothing to give up.

Here is an example to illustrate the difference:

If I ask you what colour socks you are wearing right now you have two ways to come up with an answer:

• You can have a think about it, you can think back to this morning and try to remember putting your socks on, and you can probably tell me what colour you think they are.

• Alternatively, you can take a quick look at your socks and tell me what colour they actually are!

Hopefully you would agree that you can only be 100% certain by looking.

For the purpose of our dialogue together, it is going to be very important that you are clear about this difference. Knowing is about knowledge which is all in the mind and we are not interested in that. We are only interested in looking at and seeing what is actually going on in your present moment to moment experience. We are only interested in your direct experience in the moment.

Does that make sense?

HI Becca
The move took longer and more of my time than I'd expected! Sorry for the delay in my getting back to you.
Here's your next exercise:
Sit quietly and relax, take your time just looking at what is in front of you for awhile.
Observe how the mind is dividing and labelling every thing into objects and is embellishing them with stories about what they are.
Give it some time
Then, stop watching the objects as labelled objects. Just look at the seeing itself. Observe the pure process of seeing. This is direct experience (DE).
Let me know how you get on with this

xx

The mind naturally labels and stories arise even with direct seeing. The thoughts still arise after a few moments of clear thinking. I am not in control of this. Although there is a short moment of space as I concentrate on the task of direct seeing then shortly after follows the thoughts, however I allow them to pass and focus on seeing the objects for what they are without the labels.
