Hi Paula
How exciting!!! (Just a thought ;-) )
Would a flower be able to become a lion if she connects with source?
Good point. And a daffodil can never be a rose. And a rose will be similar to all other roses but each rose will be unique.
1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?
No. Self, me, I are all labels. There has never been a separate entity "self/me/I".
2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.
A baby comes into the world experiencing, with no sense of self, just as an animal has no sense of self. And then it is taught through language "I am Lynne", this is "mine", "I" am happy/sad..., "my" Mum, "my" Dad , "our" house. This is useful to enable us to communicate, but gives "us" the belief that we are controlling our lives, separately from everyone else. Every time the self/me/I label is used, it reinforces the need to compare "ourselves" with others, some with inflated image of self (I am better than others) or need to achieve goals to prove this to "oneself" or poor self image (I'm not good enough). All of this is distraction from the fact that everything is one - nothing is separate - and fosters division and hate rather than unity and love. "We" live in our own little worlds, unconsciously wrapped up in the latest drama, instead of seeing that life is just happening, that everything is simply experience, doing fine without "us".
3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.
It feels ok - and peaceful. Life is actually very simple. Initially when I thought of there being no self, a lot of tears came, i couldn't see the point of life. Now I think (forgive the "I" terminology and yes it's just a thought) that by keeping the channel (of thought) as clear as possible and being present in the now then life can flow with intention and purpose in a more conscious way, with greater richness and who knows, perhaps even more meaning than before. And certainly with a more conscious connection to all living things.
4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?
I don't know about being the "last bit," but....
With absolute certainty I knew I couldn't choose my next thought so realised I wasn't in control.
Breaking down experience to see it was just a chain of thought + experience was a lightbulb moment
Looking in kitchen - seeing how selective thoughts and memories are - realising it's just perception and (following goldfish example) that thoughts are not real
Hands exercise - this was major! Seeing that it just happened, a set of instructions were just being followed
Looking at wall - can't turn seeing off
5) Describe decision, intention, free will, choice and control. What makes things happen? How does it work? What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.
Decision/Choice
seem to operate the same way. An event may occur, or instructions received, or sensation in the body, prompting something to be done. Thought may then come in (or may not) with a range of possible options, each of which is evaluated/processed (or not) by the brain with lots of thought. Sometimes there may be sensations in for example the gut. All these thoughts and sensations just occur without control, management or assistance, although thought may arise that the person is managing (while under illusion of separate self).
Thought loops in a circular fashion until eventually a decision/choice is made.
Intention
"I" can set a positive intention. But consciousness is actually setting it, not "me".
So..."I'm going to set a positive intention for my yoga practice" - thought
"Today I nourish and honour my body" - thought
Intention is just more thought, although it is conscious thought rather than unconscious thought - ie there is awareness of what the thoughts are rather than unconscious daydreaming.
Free will
Whilst it appears there is free will, there isn't! If "I" can't control thought, "i" cant control life, decisions "we" appear to be making are being made for "us" or through "us". Eeek no free will. Sounds worse than no control! - just a thought. However, there is freedom in having no free will...paradoxically!
Control
I'm not in control and never have been. This knowledge would have saved a lot of heartache!!! You cant control your environment or other people. The joke is you cant control yourself either! Trying to control is resistance to what is. Pointless and futile because it cant be done.
What makes things happen? How does it work?
Nothing! They just happen! Humans are just following instructions...being used as a conduit for experience...and thought....stuff happens which leads to thought, reaction, action.....which leads to more stuff happening leading to thought, reaction, action.
E.g. I receive an email asking me to fill in a Questionnaire so i fill it in and send it back by the due date. The person receiving it will do their admin bit at their end. And in 6 months time - something may or may not happen as a result. Or I give someone a picture, they buy me a bunch of flowers as a thank you.
What are you responsible for?
Interesting. Before this process I would have said my thoughts and actions. Now...allowing life to flow, living and loving with integrity, living life as consciously as possible. Because the experience is enriched from a conscious perspective, rather than living in a dream state. It's like in one we're switched on, and the other switched off. However...not being in control/having free will does seem to give us carte blanche to do or not do anything and not have to face the consequences??
6) Anything to add?
Wondering "what next?" As this is obviously just the start. However I guess I don't need to worry about that as it will all take care of itself ;-)
Thank you Paula
Lynne
