Is there a 'me', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?

There is no me anywhere...never has been; never will be. 'Me' is a fictitious label.

Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works.

Illusion of separate self 'is born' at a very young age; when pure perception of one reality (seen/seer/seeing) is replaced with false assumption (ownership of thought...'me', 'my', 'mine'), as both demonstrated and perpetuated by older, wiser illusions, reinforced and expanded upon by society and regarded as truth by all.

How does it feel to see this? describe in detail

Upon waking, intense sensations of sadness and loss (similar to those associated with a break-up or a death); as body moves about the day, there is a shift into a calm sense of completion and relief (comparable to the sigh of relief felt upon reaching 'the end' of a great book or film); though there is knowing that I completed nothing, and nothing is complete. There is knowing that SEEING is just the beginning; yet there is no sense of urgency; no seeking. 'I' thoughts still flow constantly but fall away more quickly. Laughter erupts frequently in the recognizing of the meaningless of all ('I' never laughed out loud). Tension arises in body from 'habitual effort'; learning to recede and relax back into the expansive space. Body and brain frequently experiencing sensation of (an unfamiliar) 'lightness'; a good emptiness.

How would you describe it to somebody who has never heard about this illusion but is curious about it.

Something in the wording literally grabbed the body/brain and held it 'there', reading the words "that it is this moment that is the one" over and over. There was an intense awareness of life flowing: computer screen glowing, crisp breeze blowing curtains, ambient layers buzzing...pure perception of one reality (no 'me' anywhere); an imploding 'pop'...a 'whomp'. Time stood still. SEEING happened.

This moment was the one I had wanted my whole life. It was absolutely uneventful; yet absolutely unforgettable...it was liberation.
