Hi :)
Please tell everything you realized about about self.
A baby is born. It experiences life quite simply - then it is given a label - a name. Instead of this being used for communication and convenience, it is the start of the construct of identity, persona, self, my teddy, my mummy, my house. Then in later life my goals, my husband, my car. This pure form of "being" forgets very quickly how to "be".
Whole lives and identities are built around sense of self. I'm sporty, I'm a vegetarian, I'm kind....all labels. The ego clings to this identity as without it, it can see no purpose.
Further still, ""I am (label)" gives us the idea that we are an entity separate from everyone else, the 'everyone else' perceived as a whole bunch of other separate/individual entities. As such, it is possible for people to hate, wound, kill, get angry with....rather than seeing everything and everyone as a different expression of the same thing...
The self believes thought and memory and thinks they are real, when in actual fact is is just a thought or stored perception, neither of which are real.
Sense of self gives rise to the belief that it is flesh and blood that is born and dies, that it is an entity inhabiting the body, or the body itself.
The sense of self may cause us to feel threatened by the words or actions of "others" and we can be drawn into unconscious behaviour (e.g. getting angry) when this occurs
