If you look, you'll find tension in your gut with "I" that is not there without it. Check.

I love this pointer/exercise but I would like some clarification.

Is the “I” always associated with a contraction in the gut?
Previously I have worked with this and I noticed that when orienting to objects the subject was felt to be in the heart or behind the eyes ( for most seen objects)
I realize this is not exactly what you are pointing to with the sensory correlation with lies but I am confused-
1. Are you saying the “ I “ is always a gut contraction?
2. If the “ I “ is absent from the “pain in the neck” thought, there is still sensation
in the neck, is there not ( I had neck surgery last week)?

Upon re-reading your post I notice you said “ lies are USUALLY felt in the heart or solar plexus….’

That makes more sense!

"

Peaceful" is an interpretation of a body Sensation, not the Sensation itself, for example.

Do you see that?

Yes it is clear

The first “ lie” that came to mind is one I tell myself
Frequently. “ I am responsible for the pain/suffering of others” this evokes a sensation of heaviness and heat in the heart area, contraction in the solar plexus and tightness in jaw.

Another lie; I told an Amazon rep over the phone that the item was not as listed as opposed to not meeting expectations so I could get free return shipping.
This is a small lie I use with Amazon to “ work the system”
I feel this again as contraction and burning in both the heart and solar plexus ( primarily the heart) but not as intensely as the first lie. there is also a bit of nausea and rumbling in the stomach.

It is really fascinating to tune into this in moment to moment experience. Wow. Although I have been aware that this is happening- (kinesiology works based on this principle for example) I have not made these sensations conscious with more subtle everyday lies.

Good. Stay aware of these Sensations as you practice and inquire here.

Sports Exercise

The following link is a 7 minute clip of a soccer game. If you prefer another sport…please feel free to find one to do this exercise with.

1. Watch one minute with the sound turned OFF, watching ‘people’ messing about with a round thing on a field, up and down, up and down. Let it sink in, the whole experience.

2. Once the first minute is completed, now watch another whole minute with the commentary turned ON.

Notice the differences.

Notice how the commentator (thought) offers lots of know-how, even advice. It seems to feel as though they can influence, somehow, what is going on, as though one outcome is much preferred to the opposite outcome. The commentary may seem to heighten any supporter feelings which are there, and call for an identification with one team or other, and with the importance of the game itself.

3. Now turn the volume OFF AGAIN and just watch the action with NO audible commentary, the shapes moving around on the screen etc. Again notice all the differences in what is appearing as experience.

4. Now turn the volume ON again and ignore what you think you know thought is talking about, and just notice it as sound.

What did you find when doing this exercise? Is the commentary on the soccer game a necessity for the play to happen?

And in the same way, is the inner narration of thought a necessity for the play of life to happen?

I tried multiple times with multiple different sports. Somehow the scoreboards and body language of the players communicates alot of what the sportscaster says. The narration definitely adds a sense of meaning and sensationality,
but I could not simply see the colored shapes moving up and down etc. All the facial expressions, hugging were ascribing
significance without the sound.

Is the commentary on the soccer game a necessity for the play to happen?

Absolutely not. Actually it was a much better experience to watch without it.
The play of life certainly does not need a narrator.
Lately I am finding listening to those speaking with authority, or emotionality about what they know or what is "right" to be meaningless. I turn off radio stations I used to enjoy. I can't listen to many spiritual teachers. I haven't read books for years. Life doesn't need or deserve the knower or commentator, yet they too are part of the show, are they not?
I hope this is a phase since it has made it increasingly difficult to converse and socialize with most if not all folks.

This am I woke up with a sense of panic which I felt as burning in the chest. The thought "what if I never "get this" arose but as I released the thought as meaningless the sensations of discomfort remained. I tried the sensory grounding you suggested. I had to keep returning to it because thoughts wanted to intrude and capture my attention. For no reason whatsoever I have been out of sorts all morning. The urge to distract with activities and relationships is strong. I am burning in a fire of sorts that is extremely uncomfortable.

I regret to say that I've been in that phase for years; however, other people I know have moved through that into what is described as wonder, awe & gratitude. Some go do work on Ten Fetters or The Work of Byron Katie after they SEE here. All the stories based on "self" need to be questioned.

I have a question...... For a while I have had the impression that the years I spent "resting as awareness" identifying as the ocean not the waves, the unlimited, infinite "space-like' indescribable (Source, awareness, God,etc) is a subtle place where the "self" can hide out. "Iam" implies there is an "i" there does it not? It may not be the person with gender, an age and a history but it is still a form of separation and can lead to a form of suffering some people refer to as "lost in emptiness" or "the awareness trap" (Fetter 8)

This is still a bit confusing as far as LU and the first fetter is concerned.......

Can you help here?

Yes that's right but we don't guide Fetter 8 here only 1 really & 2 and 3 fall too.

This sounds like you've already seen no self. If so, why are you here? You said it was only conceptually clear, but that sounds embodied.

Some people have told me I have, yet I often have the embodied sense I am the doer, thinker etc and get caught up believing my thoughts…..So many people who absolutely know they are through for sure……

This is why I want to go back to the first fetter with beginners mind.

Discussion of track 7 "Where is "I"'

Very interesting to pay attention to the "Qualities of thought" vs. the content.
1. Space/location
2. Time
3. Emotional tone (sensation plus story)


I found the exercise in track #7, "changing the location quality of a thought" to be alot of fun.
I did a dark retreat once and I noticed this "location quality' of thought" was easy to play with since there was no "out there" to see or hear for a week.
I could move images around in space, the entire scene or individual objects moving front behind at distance etc)
I also noticed the story or emotional valence thought ascribed to an image or memory could be swapped or changed. I practiced changing the feeling color of the glasses or lens I used to perceive people and objects, etc.

I did not consciously move thoughts/images around in apparent time as he does in this meditation.....
Yet I just noticed thought of past and future is actually spatial. The past is to the left and the future is to the right as if there is a literal timeline on the 'mind screen'

The question
"where is location of the "i" thought?"

Behind the eyes (first person point of view)

Where is the "i" who found the location?
just "here" or "this" unlocatable and undifferentiated from the perception itself.

If It is behind the eyes it creates an infinite regression - some people have called this the Cartesian Theater (I have a great picture but I can't post it)

This is an endless self referential and ridiculous loop.
Thus be logic the "i" is unlocatable. It is just "here" or "this" unlocatable and undifferentiated from the perception itself.

Yet somehow I "feel it" behind the eyes as the doer alot of the time.
