Hi Nona,
How do the labels "good" and "bad" get attached to things?
The labels “good” and “bad” get attached when Life does/doesn’t go the way I tell myself it should be going. When it doesn’t match my story of how it should go, or how I want it to go. Sort of a story on top of a story.
What happens when, instead of consciously following a list and engaging in "do-ing", you simply notice what happens? For example, sit quietly, and as the idea that there is something to DO arises, just notice it. Then notice what happens after the idea arises.
When "things need to be done", don't they get done? Is is actually necessary for a "you" to come riding in to take over the DO-ing of chores? Or do those chores which actually need to get done just happen?
Is there any chore which does not simply happen if it actually needs to be accomplished?
Again I find myself realizing I am not the do-er, only to race back in and start taking credit to give a sense of control. Yes, the things that need to get done happen. I look back and say, “I did that” and everyone agrees. If I try to sit and do nothing, eventually I just get up and do something. Or, something is done through me. I can’t sit forever, it moves. Even while sitting, things happen. Swallow, heartbeat, breath, blink, scratch, sniff, squirm, etc. These are not planned events. There is no list with these things on it and they are done. Why would the other things, which I put on a list, be any different. Some happen, others don’t. I notice.

Hi Gardener,

What's judging? What decides Life isn't going the way you tell yourself it should be going?

What would happen without a sense of control?

Okay, I'll bite. Why?

How's the pretending "there is nothing in charge of anything" going?

Hi Nona,

I find the judgment to come only from beliefs, there is nothing else behind them, just a collection of thoughts or a single thought. The judgment comes after I have the belief that things should be a certain way other than they actually are. With no sense of control I go back to noticing that Life happens, and “I” am aware of what is happening. It just keeps on happening with or without the story of control. I can’t stop it, steer or direct it, control it. Projections of fear (future) motivate the desire to control, without the fear there is no need, the awareness is just aware and Life keeps happening.

I like this actually, it is a big relief to me - at least a relief that I am not in charge of anything. I see proof of this all around me, no control, no wizard pulling on levers and cables deciding what is next. I visualize a giant organism of which I am a microscopic dot, some greater intelligence is at work, but not really in control. Everyone, everything connected in some way and it feels like a relief to me. I feel closer to those around me in my insignificance and find the sameness that allows for greater kindness and compassion. No competition, not even survival. The only thing to do is be present and observe, which brings me even closer. I am most at peace when I am present, not engaged in a future or past story, but fully in this moment and in complete surrender. Then I notice a belief, I attach and judgment follows, then a desire for control. But I don’t always attach, I can notice a belief and the next moment it is gone without proof it existed. I heard Katie say once something to that effect and it really made sense to me - something like ‘notice the belief, it comes and then goes, what is your proof it ever existed in the first place?” Just another thought.

I come back to the idea that “no self” is not a state or a way of being, feeling or thinking, just a fact. Thoughts of self arise even though no-self is a fact. Then attachment, or no attachment. The story of self creates most of my suffering and desire to control. There was an earthquake last night in the bay area where I live, I woke up to the bed/house swaying back and forth and didn't have the thought of earthquake. I had the thought that the dog was shaking the bed. No fear, no adrenaline rush, just groggy and reaching out to touch the dog. He was sound asleep and then the thought of earthquake came in. A little fear, then a lot of future projection about preparing for the big one, what needs to be done, etc., etc. I notice that the foundation of the beliefs about the future was the notion of a self, that was the strong underlying assumption. Self, separation, control, survival. Interesting experience. No self, no fear.

Exactly.

Have you seen through the illusion that you are, or have, a separate entity "self"?

Hi Nona,

Yes, I see that self is only an illusion and no-self is true reality. I watched a video yesterday that really drove this home for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq248KMOh8I

I'd never heard of this person but a friend sent it and it really lands for me. When I think of the difference between a thought/statement that just comes and goes (like, 'what a nice day today') or a thought/statement that is very upsetting (like, 'you are not very good at what you do') I notice the illusory self is the only difference. What is upset? Just an imaginary self. Without it, there is no upset.

Also, I read an article this morning about a man who lived as a hermit in the woods for nearly 30 years. No human interaction at all, just alone. Here is what he said about it:

"I did examine myself," he said. "Solitude did increase my perception. But here's the tricky thing—when I applied my increased perception to myself, I lost my identity. With no audience, no one to perform for, I was just there. There was no need to define myself; I became irrelevant. The moon was the minute hand, the seasons the hour hand. I didn't even have a name. I never felt lonely. To put it romantically: I was completely free."

These hints/clues/facts seem to be showing up a lot and when they do I feel an understanding in them. I am going to practice (when I feel a reaction) going in and asking myself who is reacting or who is the reaction for? I think this practice will keep the fact that there is no self close and perhaps more accessible in my daily life.

Dear Gardener,
I am going to practice (when I feel a reaction) going in and asking myself who is reacting or who is the reaction for?
May I suggest you ask, rather, WHAT is reacting, or WHAT is the reaction for?
There is no separate entity "who" that could react or for whom the reaction might be. Asking "Who" questions is like trying to divide by zero: there is no answer as it's an unreasonable question.

We have a set of questions we ask when one has seen through the illusion that one is, or has, a separate entity "self".

1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?

2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.

3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.

4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?

5) Describe decision, intention, free will, choice and control. What makes things happen? How does it work? What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.

6) Anything to add?

So sorry it has taken so long. I've been busy with work, events, crazy scheduling stuff. Spent the day yesterday with Katie which was wonderful. I didn't want to write a short hasty response and I wanted to take my time with your questions. Thanks for checking in, I'm about 1/2 way through the questions above and should finish later today.

Nona,

There is no separate entity "who" that could react or for whom the reaction might be. Asking "Who" questions is like trying to divide by zero: there is no answer as it's an unreasonable question.
I like the suggestion. WHO implies a separate self that does not exist. I notice using the word WHO is an old habit.
1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?
I have no proof of one and cannot find any proof that doesn’t rely on thoughts/beliefs which also cannot be proven. I wonder what life would be like having never been taught a separate self.
2) Explain in detail what the illusion of separate self is, when it starts and how it works from your own experience. Describe it fully as you see it now.
For me it starts with a sensation, followed by a belief or thought. Could be an image, then followed by labels that create separation. Also could be the sensation of touch, and thoughts of it / me. Could also be hearing something and followed by beliefs that “they said this” or “she said that” and then attachment and more beliefs. I attach to a collection of thoughts/beliefs and form the identity of me, a separate self. Then it cascades as I believe more and attach more, it appears that the sensations are proof (seeing, hearing, touching, etc) but really in my experience the “proof” comes from beliefs/thoughts that are not fact. With only sensation and no thought/belief about the sensation there is no separation. The sensation itself becomes a projection of mind if I sit with it. The result is the awareness that I am not the do-er. No future and no past. Just observing.
3) How does it feel to see this? What is the difference from before you started this dialogue? Please report from the past few days.
For me it is a relief. I am relieved of the weight of responsibility, the need to control, compete, survive, etc. It feels like a layer beneath the layer beneath the layer, to infinity of no-self. Everything feels a projection of mind, even the sensations, even the concept of mind itself. I am given a true experience of letting go of all of it, complete surrender. The reactions have changed, or rather the attachments have changed. It feels like freedom, and remains very accessible. And, I understand it will attach again, because that is what it does - but it can be observed differently with this understanding. It comes, it goes but the fact of no-self remains.
4) What was the last bit that pushed you over, made you look?
What made me look initially is my own experience in asking the question “Do I exist?” and not really finding proof other than beliefs about “I” when I looked. The harder it became to find an “I” the more I wanted to look. I then started focusing more on times when this “I” was upset, sad, depressed, angry, etc. I felt detached doing this a lot of the times, as if I was observing someone else, even though it was the “I” being observed. This gap allowed me to be more objective about what was happening and be less triggered even when it was triggered. As I peeled the onion I saw less and less that pointed to a real self, the illusion unfolded.
5) Describe decision, intention, free will, choice and control. What makes things happen? How does it work? What are you responsible for? Give examples from experience.
I find that it is all just happening. Something else is in charge, or not, and all of the decisions, intentions, free will, etc happen after the fact. The only thing I am truly responsible for is staying clear, clear of things like I am not the do-er, everybody/everything is innocent, I am everyone/everything and everyone/everything is me. I am responsible for staying connected through this, and then looking to see how I can be of service. I am responsible for my suffering. Yesterday someone said “Thank You” to Katie and she asked, “Who said Thank You?” The person responded, “I did.” She asked for proof. There was none, except a past and some vague images. I really see that. How it all works is really none of my business and I find I don’t need to understand other than to understand my connection, and my suffering when I lose that connection. Intention, free will, choice and control are illusions or stories to help calm the fears. In this society we label people heroes and criminals for these things, but really the only thing people have is clarity or a lack of clarity. That is actually just a story too. One story compared to the opposite, clarity compared to confusion, hero - villain, good - bad, pretty - ugly, failure - success, etc.
6) Anything to add?
I notice how much I love not being able to find a separate self and how this connects me to everything and everyone. At first when this concept was introduced to me years ago it was terrifying, but now I find it calming and very peaceful. The mere image of a stranger’s face is completely different to me. I am struck with beauty, compassion, empathy and still notice it is all a projection - every pixel. And I notice the stories, identities and reactions that help me see where I am confused. I noticed a short sense of guilt when I hadn’t responded in so long, but I laughed when I noticed it - it doesn’t make sense to me but there it was. I saw a dog hit and killed front of me two days ago, I was trying to help it get out of the road but a woman didn’t see it and hit it about 60mph, it died instantly. It was thrown about 50 feet and I noticed my attention went to the woman who hit it. She was crying and very upset, I hugged her and told her it wash’t her fault - I saw the whole thing and there was nothing she could do. That felt like clarity to me, like it knew where to put the attention and energy. I felt connected to all of it, the dog, the owner, the woman who hit it. It was all happening.

Thank you, Gardener.
Spent the day yesterday with Katie which was wonderful. I didn't want to write a short hasty response and I wanted to take my time with your questions.
Excellent!

Your answers are quite clear with, perhaps, the exception of #1:
1) Is there a separate entity 'self', 'me' 'I', at all, anywhere, in any way, shape or form? Was there ever?
I have no proof of one and cannot find any proof that doesn’t rely on thoughts/beliefs which also cannot be proven. I wonder what life would be like having never been taught a separate self.
I read you have no proof that 'self', 'me' 'I', exists as a separate entity. Do you believe, nevertheless, that such a 'self', 'me', 'I', exists? Perhaps an invisible, unfindable, but nevertheless controlling 'self', 'me', 'I'? Or are you quite certain that there is no such entity running some separate slice of Life described as "yours"?
Please revisit this question.

Every language on the planet (with apparently the exception of only two) separates subject and object. In this way the language continually reinforces the idea that "I" is a separate entity that is the do-er.

with love,
Nona

Hi Nona,

No, I don't believe that there is some separate self/entity running that is invisible or undefinable - I can see how I wasn't clear on that in my answer above. I see how language provides only the words that separate when we communicate. I'm curious what are the two languages that do no separate subject and object? I wonder if people who grow up with these two languages have a different experience of "self" even before looking at whether it exists or not.

Dear Gardener,

Thanks so much for your reply! I'm going to ask the other guides to have a look and ask about anything further they think needs clarifying.
I'm curious what are the two languages that do no separate subject and object? I wonder if people who grow up with these two languages have a different experience of "self" even before looking at whether it exists or not.
I wish I had noted those languages when I came across them. If memory serves, they were languages of so-called "primitive" cultures. I, too, wondered what it might be like to grow up without a language-reinforced sense of self.

Hi Gardener,

One guide asks, in Q5 you wrote:
The only thing I am truly responsible for is staying clear, clear of things like I am not the do-er, everybody/everything is innocent, I am everyone/everything and everyone/everything is me. I am responsible for staying connected through this, and then looking to see how I can be of service. I am responsible for my suffering.
The guide asks, "If there is no self, what is responsible then? What can stay clear, connected, of service and responsible for its own suffering?"

We normally assume Responsibility wherever we have Control. When it is seen there is no control, is there responsibility? If so, in what way? Could you please address this?

Another guide asks, in reference to your answer to Q5, "Take another look, is it all just happening, or is 'something in charge'? If so, describe the direct experience of this 'something'? Does something called free will really exist? How does that look right now?"

Hi Nona,

That is a good catch, thank you. When I look again I see that responsibility implies a separate self. Responsibility becomes just another concept, or thought that creates separation. An afterthought - something happens and then someone (or some thing) is said to be responsible. It is all happening, there is no responsibility without separation. Free will is another concept to validate a separate self.

No control - no responsibility - no separate self - no free will. All are concepts applied after something happens and that something is observed or experienced via the senses. The screen is not responsible for anything projected upon it. No resistance and no credit.
