How many mental processes are you aware right now?
One at a time, but there are many. Hearing a song I heard a few days ago, planning what I will eat later, wondering how to communicate clearly with you are all examples of this that occurred within the last ten seconds.
What is your direct experience (as) an organism right now?
I am the space that experiences occur in.

It's like congress. It lets members talk one at a time. But the one talking changes.

It disappears when looked for, but when forgetting the world and looking inward it takes charge like a phantom. The space is not troubled when acknowledged, though.

The voices all come from one source - the mind. But it's like there are different aspects of the mind that struggle for dominance.

Dominance over what?
Over each other. For instance, when considering how to write this reply, there are several considerations. There are aspects that deal with clarity, emotional tone, respect and awareness of the reader for instance. They are like filters or algorithms that rapidly consider what has been said and then consider what is being said. One is generally dominant. Clarity is the dominant one right now.

All of this is imagination. Complexity is a hallucination of the mind.

Try this:
Finding the Gap
This exercise has a dual purpose. Firstly, to become aware of each and every though as they appear. Secondly, the careful looking for the gap is an example of how carefully to look when looking for the ‘separate self’.

Here is a step-by-step description of how to look at thoughts. First thing is to sit for at least 10-15 minutes quietly somewhere, several times throughout your day. Close your eyes and just notice thoughts. Don’t engage with any thought, just notice them.

1. Notice the current thought that is present.
Like when you sit observing the body, a thought might arise “this is my feet” or “here is a pain” or “my breathing is too quick” or “I am bored with this exercise” or “I have better things to do” or any sorts of thoughts.

2. This thought will pass and another thought will come. So just observe this thought passing.

3. Then wait for the next thought to come.

4. When the next thought is present, just notice it, and see how it passes.

5. Then wait for the next thought to come.

6. Repeat #4 and #5 many-many times.

Between the 2 thoughts there is a gap. It can be very short or subtle, just a second or a few seconds before the next thought come in.

This is how to look at thoughts:-
Looking how they come and go, and
Observing the short gap between them.
Noticing how the current thought is passing.
And waiting for the next thought to come.

Please do the following exercise:
Throughout your waking day, try to observe the gap between thoughts as often as possible. It can be done by noticing that ‘thinking’ is happening right now, then stop and just simply wait for the next thought to come. In the ‘waiting’ there is a gap between two thoughts.

Let me know how you go.

That is challenging, but I understand.

I have been doing this and noticing that the moments where I wait for thoughts to come are defined by open awareness, then the thoughts come and I see that awareness collapses in on the thought. I let the thought go and it leaves, usually quickly, all by itself and things open up again. Then another comes and the process repeats over and over. Open => Collapse => Release => Open => Collapse again and again. The thoughts come and go by themselves. The one who sees the thoughts feels like the ego, but nobody waits for the thoughts... there's just a calm aware silence without any plans, desires or goals.

I have also noticed that I have difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. It is just a few seconds until another thought takes my attention. That's why I keep asking about concentration... I feel like it is important to see the things you keep pointing to, and that improving my concentration would improve my ability to see we are talking about.

There is a big difference between seing a thought arrise in awareness and being focus on the content of the thought (the drama).

The difference is like watching colors on a screen that it on the background. And being sited in a movie theater absorbe in the storyline and having emotion about it.

No awareness cannot be improved, but it can be forgotten. The forgetting keeps happening by becoming interested in the 'drama' of thinking, as you say.
