Where am I in this

Postby Sobhana1 » Wed Feb 28, 2024 7:51 pm

LU is focused guiding for seeing there is no real, inherent 'self' - what do you understand by this?

There is no static, non changing, person, who is in control and orchestrating their life. It seems the "me" is an ever-moving process of thoughts arising, feelings arising, physical sensations arising, sounds arising, sights arising. I love the image of the 'arisings" being the waves that come up from the ocean, have a life and disburse.

What are you looking for at LU?

I am looking for help to be pointed to what's always here, is infinite and isn't separate from the "waves". To help with mind-identification....buying into all the stories and beliefs that keep the "me" separate and isolated, and instead deeply knowing the stories and beliefs are just waves in the ocean.

What do you expect from a guided conversation?

I don't know, honestly, but definitely not being let off the hook. Giving it more thought, I think there's an expectation that the process will bring out irritation, victim and unworthiness tendencies. I have seen this when engaged with inquiry. I am beginning to see this may be a mind detour.

What is your experience in terms of spiritual practices, seeking and inquiry?

I've practiced Thai Forest Buddhist meditation for 25 years. Going on many retreats and having "experiences". I have some "good" habits from it, and some not so good habits. Three years ago Non Duality came in the picture and it resonated. Really, it's not different, just different language. One thing that was helpful in Buddhist practice is to not cling to phenomenon when meditating. It seems like many Buddhist practices are indirect pointing to no self, where as some Non Dual paintings are direct. I meditate daily and through the day challenge the "me's" thoughts. Lately, I have also brought in Inquiry, with the question, "where am I", and "what am I".

On a scale from 1 to 10, how willing are you to question any currently held beliefs about 'self? 9
